DENMARK HAS SUBSIDISED CHILDCARE, SHARED LEAVE AND WOMEN IN PUBLIC LIFE. IT ALSO HAS A GENDER PAY GAP. BOTH THINGS CAN BE TRUE.
Equality is built into Danish institutions, not just advertising copy. Yet Denmark’s own official overview notes that men on average earn more, and much of the gap follows a gender-segregated labour market.
The useful lesson
Public childcare and leave make equality easier to live. They do not finish the job. That is precisely why the story matters: structures can help, and societies can still have work left to do.
