IN DENMARK, A LIBRARY IS NOT ONLY WHERE YOU BORROW A NOVEL. IT IS WHERE YOU SIT, WORK, BRING A CHILD, USE A PRINTER, JOIN A TALK OR JUST GET OUT OF YOUR APARTMENT WITHOUT BUYING A $7 LATTE.
That sounds ordinary. It is also a small democratic miracle: a warm, useful space where being a customer is not the entry ticket.
Public space matters
A city gets kinder when there are places to go that do not demand money. Libraries do not solve loneliness or inequality. They do make the day a little more navigable for a lot of people.
