Can You Use US Dollars in Denmark? No. Bring a Card.

DENMARK USES DANISH KRONER, NOT EUROS AND DEFINITELY NOT US DOLLARS. THE GOOD NEWS: YOU WILL PROBABLY USE YOUR CARD FOR NEARLY EVERYTHING.

Denmark is a highly digital country. VisitDenmark says cash is accepted in most places, but many shops, cafés and restaurants are cashless and accept cards or mobile payments. For an American visitor, the sensible plan is simple: use a card with low foreign-transaction fees and keep a small amount of kroner only if it makes you feel calmer.

What currency does Denmark use?

The Danish krone (DKK, or just kr) is Denmark’s currency. Prices include VAT, so the number you see on the menu is normally the number you pay. This is a civilized arrangement and we recommend it.

Will my card work?

Major international cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, shops and petrol stations. But do not assume every small shop accepts every foreign card. VisitDenmark notes that smaller shops and supermarkets may not accept international cards. Have a backup card, and do not arrive with only cash dollars and optimism.

Do I need cash?

Not much. Cash works, but Denmark is moving fast toward card and mobile payment. A small emergency amount in kroner is fine; a thick envelope of cash is unnecessary.
