Do You Need to Speak Danish to Visit Denmark? No. Learn “Tak.”

YOU DO NOT NEED TO SPEAK DANISH TO VISIT DENMARK. ENGLISH IS WIDELY SPOKEN. BUT LEARNING “TAK” — THANK YOU — WILL MAKE YOU LOOK LESS LIKE YOU EXPECT THE WORLD TO COME PRE-INSTALLED IN ENGLISH.

VisitDenmark says it is easy to get around in English, and foreign films are generally shown in their original language with Danish subtitles. Menus, hotels, museums and public transport in the major cities are usually manageable in English.

Useful words that earn goodwill

  • Tak — thank you.
  • Hej — hi.
  • Undskyld — excuse me / sorry.
  • Skål — cheers.

Do not panic about pronunciation. Danes know Danish is difficult. We also know that saying “tak” with confidence is preferable to shouting “THANK YOU” as if volume were a translation app.

The real travel advice

Speak English politely, do not assume everybody is thrilled to practise it at 8 a.m., and learn a few Danish words because you are visiting somebody else’s country. That is enough.
