Greenlandic Is Not Danish. It Is the Official Language of Greenland.

GREENLANDIC — KALAALLISUT — IS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF GREENLAND. IT IS NOT A DANISH DIALECT. IT IS NOT “DANISH, BUT COLDER.”

The Greenland Self-Government Act states that Greenlandic is the official language. Danish is also widely used in public life, and English is taught in schools, but the central fact is simple: Greenland has its own language and it belongs at the centre of any serious conversation about the country.

Why Americans should know this

Too much Greenland coverage begins and ends with Denmark, ice or geopolitics. Language is a quicker way into the reality: Greenland is an Inuit society with its own culture, institutions and voice. If you are writing about it, travelling there or merely arguing online, start by using the right names.

A small practical note

You do not need to become fluent before visiting. But learn the word Kalaallit Nunaat — the Greenlandic name for Greenland — and do not assume everyone wants their home described only through somebody else’s map.
