A school, a clinic, safe streets, a train, a child care place: public spending feels less abstract when it is visible in daily life.
The accountability part matters
That is also why waste and failure make people furious. If we pay together, we get to demand that public institutions do their job. That is not anti-government. It is the whole deal.
